Sixth International Psychological Trauma Symposium was held in Istanbul on 11-13 December 2009

International Psychological Trauma Symposiums have been organized by Medical School of Kocaeli University, Psychiatry Department, Centre for Psychological Trauma; Psychiatric Association of Turkey, Scientific Section for Disaster Psychiatry; Medical School of Istanbul University, Psychiatry Department, Psychosocial Trauma Programme; Turkish Medical Association; Norwegian Medical Association and Human Rights Foundation of Turkey for many years.

The 6th International Psychological Trauma Symposium was held on 11-13 December 2009 in Istanbul. The topic of the symposium was “Trauma in Daily Life” broadening the scope of the symposium to include various social, psychological and cultural traumas occurring in daily life. 70 speakers and 252 participants attended the 19 panels, 3 conferences, 7 workshops and one forum to be held during the three-day event. Moreover several posters were presented.

We are going to discuss traumatic factors and their impacts ranging from violence in the public sphere to political violence, from football to mobbing, from sexual violence against women or children to deprivation and poverty, and more importantly their treatment, prevention and strategies to cope with them.   

Furthermore, it is also intended that the Psychological Trauma Symposiums would function as a platform to strengthen peace and solidarity, allowing cooperation among European, Balkan and Middle Eastern countries.
